Haiti is probably the most successful 'new indigenous' culture in the Americas.

Haiti is known for being a sort of continuously failed state. Corruption and political violence have been normal for most of its history, but there's another aspect of Haiti that may become more historically important.

Haiti was the first country to become independent as a result of escaped slaves building their own country.

Like Algeria, East Timor and other 'rebel' countries, Haiti has been made an example of by the colonial powers. It has been sabotaged at every turn so that other foreign observers would get the impression that 'the savages', escaped slaves, cannot self govern.

As Haiti becomes more and more established in the western hemisphere, it will eventually develop better ties to Africa than other western hemisphere countries, as the African continent develops.

Because Haiti shares an island with the Dominican Republic, an extreme melting pot, the two countries could have an unusual synergy  as colonial power starts to unravel.

The Taino indigenous people were the original inhabitants of much of the Caribbean before colonization.

"1514 census records reveal that 40% of Spanish men on the island of Hispaniola had Taíno wives.[citation needed] Ethnohistorian Lynne Guitar writes that the Taíno were declared extinct in Spanish documents as early as the sixteenth century; however, individual Taínos continued to appear in wills and legal records for several decades after the arrival of the Spaniards."

"Evidence suggests that some Taíno men and African women inter-married and lived in relatively isolated Maroon communities in the interior of the islands, where they evolved into a hybrid rural or campesino population with little or no interference from the Spanish authorities."
